Which Highlight Technique Is Right for You
When it comes to highlighting your hair there are many options to choose from. Ombre, balayage, foils, freehand- all the terms can be a bit confusing and difficult to know which highlight style is right for you. Today we'll take a look at the various techniques to help you better understand them so you can make the best choice to achieve the look you want.
Foils- Foils are the technique that people are most familiar with. This traditional method of highlighting uses foil to separate strands of hair that have color applied. It creates a high contrast between the highlighted strands and the rest of your hair. Highlights created with foil are usually not as natural looking as other methods, but this technique is perfect for the chunky highlights that are gaining in popularity right now.
Balayage- Balayage is a French word that means sweeping, which refers to how a colorist sweeps the color over your hair in this highlighting technique. This form of freehand painting produces natural-looking highlights with color graduating from darker at the crown to lighter at the tips, giving your hair a sunkissed glow. Because of the natural-looking gradient of color, this style is low maintenance because it continues to look great even when your roots start to show.
Ombre- Ombre is actually more of a highlight style than a technique. It’s really a form of balayage that uses a more vertical placement of color rather than vertical. It’s this placement of color that creates the more noticeable bands of color in an ombre. Brown to blonde is a very popular ombre style, but it works for any color combination. You can even do a fantasy color scheme like purple to pink. There are variations of ombre such as the reverse ombre that goes from light at the crown to dark at the tips and sombre which has a softer transition between the bands of color.
